The HTC Desire C is not a stranger anymore. We’ve seen it star in not one, but two blurry photo sessions. However, this is the first time we get to see it in its proper attire – via a leaked press shot. Obviously, Vodafone Portugal jumped the gun on this one and included it in its May catalog even before the thing was announced.

Leaked specs and photos are the bread and butter of this job, so we are more than happy to introduce you to the HTC Desire C.

As you’ll see below, the catalog also sheds some light on the specs of the device. Here’s what we have confirmed for now: The HTC Desire C has a 3.5-inch screen with 320×480 resolution and runs on a 600MHz processor. Connectivity-wise it’s 3.5G, whatever that means, but we’re guessing it’s HSDPA. The handset also has 4GB of internal memory and a 5MP camera. But most importantly, this low-spec’d device will run Android Ice Cream Sandwich.

According to one of our tipsters, the Desire C has a 1230 mAh battery and should retail below 200€. After all these leaks, we should see the smartphone announced rather soon.

We initially heard the name HTC Golf, then the phone briefly became the Wilfire C. But now it looks like the new budget Android from HTC will actually launch as the HTC Desire C.

Not only has it been renamed, the phone has also been caught on camera, although the shot of the phone doesn’t really tell us a great deal. It look fairly typical of a 2012 touch-screen smartphone, with nothing really jumping out at us.

A previous leak has highlighted the expected specification though, which does tell us a lot more. That claimed the phone will launch with the Ice Cream Sandwich variation of Android and will run on an 800MHz single-core processor. Also rumoured is 512MB RAM, 4GB of storage and a 3.2-inch 480×320-pixel display.

That puts it below the HTC One V, which indicates this is a budget offering from HTC, probably taking over from the HTC Wildfire line.

Time will tell, but not too much time, as this is likely to be launching in June.

If you have an unlocked or unbranded HTC One S now is the time to start hitting the “check for updates’ button. A new firmware version if being pushed OTA.

The update takes you to v1.78 and is only 60MB. It is still based on Android 4.0.3. The only obvious difference is that the three dot menu software butting in certain apps has been removed. This is only in apps when the three dot menu button is a large key at the bottom of the screen and a smaller one at the top, which is a good thing as on my One X I find the bottom key to be quite obtrusive in certain applications.

Hopefully the update will also fix the Wi-fi disconnection but that some users have struggled with – being an intermittent issue this isn’t confirmed yet.

Just to remind this update is for UNBRANDED handsets so if you purchased your through a carrier you are unfortunately going to have to wait a couple more weeks. Let us know if you have a One S and have noticed any other changes in this update!

Orange has started a massive clearout of the HTC Radar which can be had instore only for £99.99 plus a compulsory £10 topup.

The mobile phone operator has removed the handset from its online store meaning that it now doesn’t have any HTC Windows Phone handsets on PAYG.

The phone – which is powered by Windows Phone 7.5 Tango – was only released in October 2011 and is essentially a Windows Phone version of the Android-based Desire S. It has a single core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor clocked at 1GHz, 512MB RAM and only 8GB onboard storage.

As expected, there’s a 3.7in 800 x 480 pixels S-LCD capacitive display covered with Corning Gorilla Glass, a five-megapixel camera with a secondary VGA one, microUSB, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi GPS plus a 1520mAh battery.

The price of Windows Phone handsets has tumbled down significantly over the past few months. We first witnessed how the likes of the LG Optimus 7 E700/Jil Sanders dropped to around £150. Then Vodafone dropped a bombshell with a £120 Nokia Lumia 710 before Orange cleard out the Radar.

All in all, these price drops position the Windows Phone as a price sensitive, value for money platform on par with Android.

Drew Bamford, HTC’s AVP of user experience, recently sat down with LaptopMag’s reporters and unveiled some of his company’s secrets. The main topic was HTC’s latest version of Sense, the platform designed for the company’s Android Ice Cream Sandwich smartphones.

Bamford detailed the design process and the sources of inspiration that led HTC’s team to develop Sense 4.0.

For both himself and his HTC customers, it makes sense to have top end models like the HTC One S and One X integrated with the best features available. Some of the enhancements brought by Sense 4.0 are tied to the visuals.

The glossy buttons are now toned down with a more matte appearance taking their place. “We took inspiration from matte finishes that have become very popular in high-end automobiles. We also took a warmer approach to the color palette to make it feel more inviting and friendly,” said Bamford.

The graphic interface has also been simplified to help users easily find what they need, whilst the familiar weather clock was kept within the design.

GSM Arena did a full battery life test on HTC One V to assess its performance and benchmark it against other handsets. Here are the results in brief:

On the call test the battery lasted a full 10 hours, surpassing even the HTC One S in this area.

Using web browsing, the battery lasted 6 hours and 49 minutes, coming in close to even the Apple iphone4S’ performance at the higher end of this category.

In the video playback test it took 5 hours and 20 minutes which isn’t bad but places it towards the bottom end of benchmark table.

It’s time to tally the scores – the HTC One V will get you 31 hours of usage away from a charger, if you use it for an hour each of telephony, web browsing, and video playback every day. Even though its performance in the different challenges was quite impressive, its stand-by tended to use quite a lot of power, which took its toll on the overall result.

That’s not too great, but we’ve seen worse performers and the One V will last you a full day even if you do more than an hour of web browsing or watch a movie. It will last even longer if you use it mostly for calling.

It now looks like the wait is in fact nearly over! T-Mobile announced the 16th June for the release but it now looks like it may be sooner than that as they have finished successfully testing the firmware and the roll-out should be starting soon.

The other good news is it looks like you guys will also receive a Sense update too, not Sense 4 unfortunately but 3.6 which is basically the Lite version.

HTC’s high profile marketing campaign for the One series has paid off with the One X storming into the top five bestselling handsets chart.

Sales figures obtained by Mobile reveal that the One X, the flagship device of HTC’s new smartphone series, has sold on average more than 10,000 devices per week since it was launched last month.

According to the data, the One X accounted for 4.4% of handset sales for the week commencing 16 April.

Retailers have lauded the device and said it has been a real hit with consumers. One said: ‘The One X is a great phone and has a really good overlay of Ice Cream Sandwich compared to the Nexus. The launch was strong… It looks a damn sight cooler than the [iPhone] 4S.’

The rest of the top five was dominated by Apple and Samsung. Research firm Juniper this week revealed that the two companies are responsible for almost 60% of handsets shipped globally. According to the figures, the One X has been outselling the likes of the BlackBerry Curve 9300 and 9360, as well as the Bold 9900.

HTC launched its biggest ever marketing campaign in the UK last month to promote the One series, with advertising across television, cinema and billboards. Strategy Analytics executive director Neil Mawston said: ‘It has been looking to bring more focus to the UK, Europe and Asia after volumes in the US plunged. The One X may not be an S II killer, or even an S III killer, but this device has certainly helped improve HTC’s overall portfolio and bring it closer to its competitors.’
